1. How much does it cost to frame something?
It really varies, depending on the size of the piece to be framed and the materials you choose. Larger works of art and more ornate frames and mats will be more expensive, while smaller things, posters, and simple frames will be less expensive. It's almost impossible to pinpoint a price without seeing the work in the shop and picking out a frame, but we'll happily give you a free estimate if you bring it in.
2. What's the difference between going to a frame shop and buying an off-the-shelf frame?
Frame selection, quality, and personal service. A professional frame shop will choose every element to bring out the best in the piece and custom-cut everything to fit properly. Off-the-shelf frames can do neither, and the cardboard and matboard sometimes included with the frame contains acid which can damage the work over time. You also have more options at a custom frame shop, such as UV-protection glass, suede or silk mats, and a plethora of different frames.
3. How long does it take?
2 weeks, give or take. If we have the materials in stock, we can do it sooner. Sometimes we can do things in less than 7 days, but a rush charge will be added.
4. I want to get something framed but I have no idea what I want. Can you help me?
That's why we're here! We'll help you find the color, texture, and style of framing, matting, and type of glass that best enhances the artwork. See our Framing page for some ideas to get you started!
5. Can you frame something that's a really unusual size?
More than likely. We custom-cut all our materials to fit the art in question. The largest piece we can frame is 60" x 40". If the art isn't rectangular or circular/ovular, we can still use a regular frame and mat--we just leave enough space around the art to accomodate it, as in this newspaper article with missing corners.
6. Can you cut round- or oval-shaped mats and frames?
Yes! We can cut round or oval mats, but we have to order the frames in standard sizes, so we will find the frame that's the best fit and cut the mat to the right size to rest the art seamlessly in the frame.
7. Can you fix a piece of artwork that came loose in the frame?
Yes, as long as the frame isn't damaged beyond repair.
8. I bought a piece of artwork but I don't like the frame it came in. Can you replace it?
Absolutely. Bring it in and we'll find something new.
9. I already have a frame I like. Can you use that on my artwork?
As long as it's not damaged, yes. However, old frames tend to be brittle and splintery, so we recommend going with a new frame. We have hundreds of styles to match the old frame as closely as possible.
10. Can you order and frame mirrors?
Yes, and we can do circular and beveled mirrors as well.
11. Can you repair/restore damaged artwork?
No, unfortunately, we cannot. Visit an art restorer first, then bring the artwork to us to be properly framed and protected from futher deterioration.
12. Can you tell me how much a painting or print is worth?
No, you'll have to visit an art appraiser for that.
13. Can you frame a piece of artwork to match another framed work of art?
Probably. We can match nearly any color mat board or metal frame, and we can usually find very close matches for wood frames. If the two works will be hung close together and you really want them to look the same, we recommend reframing the older work to match the new one.
14. Can you frame a piece of artwork to match my cabinets or wood furniture?
Often. We have frames to fit any style of interior design and nearly every color of wood. We can't always get exactly the same little decorative flourish on the corner of your cabinets, but we can pick something close enough to harmonize with the rest of your interior design. If you really want to match a particular element of your home, bring in a sample of the paint, tile, carpentry, or fabric.
15. Can you frame a mask, medal, sports jersey, or other three-dimensional object?
Usually. For 3D objects, we use a very deep frame called a shadow box. As long as the item isn't too heavy or cumbersome, we can secure it in a frame using glue, pins, and/or hidden stitches. Special cases are available for jerseys and uniforms.
Here are just a few of the 3-D objects we can frame:
